Tobias Richter began his theatrical career in the area of stage management with the Geneva Grand Théâtre in 1972 while studying philosophy in Geneva and Zurich. After this period of training with Götz Friedrich, he worked with Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, and the General Manager of Munich, August Everding, who called on him in 1977 at the Bayerische Staasoper.
In 1980, he stage managed his first piece at the Marstalltheater, Munich under the aegis of the Bayerische Staatsoper and became permanent Manager with the Kassel Opera, of which he was to assume the General Management and artistic programming for opera, dramatic theatre, ballet and concerts in 1982-83.
In 1984, he was appointed General Manager of the Bremen Opera then he went on to assume the management of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf / Duisbourg. There he rebuilt the biggest operatic troupe in Germany, capable of presenting 400 performances a season. There, he produced inter alia Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Pasquale, Così Fan Tutte, Orpheus in the Underworld, The White Lady and Don Giovanni.
He has also developed a significant career as stage manager in such prestigious theatres as the Toulouse Théâtre du Capitole, the Turin Teatro Regio, the Monte-Carlo Opera, the Venice Teatro Fenice, the Naples Teatro San Carlo, etc, and placed his talent at the service of such great international festivals as those of Aix-en-Provence and the Verona Arena.
Since 1998, he has been a Professor of Opera at the Higher Robert Schumann Academy of Düsseldorf.
In 2003, Tobias Richter was elected Vice-President of the OPERNKONFERENZ, under the Presidency of Sir Peter Jonas. He is a member of the Chambre Professionnelle des Directeurs d’Opéras (France) and a member of the Board of Directors of the European Operatic Association "OperaEuropa".
In November 2004, he was designated Director of the MUSICAL SEPTEMBER International Classical Music Festival in Montreux/Vevey, in Switzerland.
He is currently General Manager of the Geneva Grand Théâtre.
