Vallorbe

Vallorbe is located on the banks of the River Orb whence it derived its name. It is in the middle of a small valley dominated on one side by the Dent de Vaulion chain and on the other by that of the Mont d’Or, closed off to the south-west by the Mont d’Orzeires. It snuggles amongst the most picturesque sites of the Vaud Jura at an altitude of between 750 and 1480 metres.

In this magnificent setting overflowing with treasures for nature lovers, you will discover a restful place where you can recuperate and admire the fauna and richly coloured flora!

After the marvellous "Vallorbe Grottos" were opened in 1974, there followed other tourist attractions such as the "Iron and Railway Museum of French-speaking Switzerland, the Pré Giroud Fort and the “Juraparc" animal park at Mont d’Orzeires. Nature lovers will also appreciate the pleasant walk through the Orb Gorge, as well as the meadows and summits of the Dent de Vaulion and the Mont d’Or, from where the view is extraordinary.

Thanks to the river that provides a sure and regular driving force and the iron ore found at the Mont d’Orzeires, Vallorbe has, since ancient times, been able to devote itself to metalworking and has thus played an important role in the history of this industry well beyond its territorial limits. Other industrial activities have developed since, but always to do with iron, as well as with plastics and handicrafts.

Local sports enthusiasts are spoilt by the facilities placed at their disposal: an outdoor skating-rink; a heated swimming pool; a climbing wall; bowling greens, football pitches and tennis courts; track-and-field infrastructures and much more.

There are also many events offered all year round by more than 40 local sports, cultural and artistic societies. It was in this spirit that the Township, as a matter of course, undertook to hold the Marcello Viotti International Singing Contest, in order to pay tribute to this son of the village who became a brilliant conductor.
